You know that fresh, hydrated, ridiculously glowy skin that somehow makes you look more put together even when you’re wearing basically no makeup?
That’s the goal.
And while I love a good illuminating skin tint as much as the next person, the best glow really does start underneath your makeup.

The good news is that getting glowing skin doesn’t require a 12-step skincare routine, a bathroom cabinet overflowing with products, or spending hundreds of dollars on whatever serum is currently going viral.
It mostly comes down to a few things: hydration, a healthy skin barrier, consistent exfoliation, the right active ingredients, and sunscreen.
If your skin has been looking a little dull, dry, uneven, or just generally blah lately, here’s how to build a skincare routine for glowing skin that is actually realistic enough to stick with.
What Actually Makes Your Skin Glow?
When we talk about “glowing skin,” we’re usually talking about skin that looks:
- Hydrated and plump
- Smooth in texture
- Even in tone
- Bright rather than dull
- Healthy and naturally luminous
And hydration plays a huge role in that.
When your skin is dry or dehydrated, fine lines and texture can look more noticeable and your complexion can lose some of its natural luminosity. Moisturizers help add and retain moisture, while ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid can help support hydrated, healthy-looking skin.
But hydration is only part of the equation.
Ingredients like vitamin C can help brighten the appearance of dull skin and uneven pigmentation, while retinoids can improve skin texture and the appearance of fine lines over time.
And then there is the step we all know we’re supposed to be doing…
Sunscreen.
Daily sun protection is one of the most important things you can do to prevent the sun damage that contributes to dark spots, uneven tone, texture and premature signs of aging.
So before buying another trendy serum, make sure the basics are covered.
If that already sounds like a lot, don’t worry. We’re going to break down each of these steps, what they actually do, and which products are worth adding to your routine below. You definitely don’t need to use everything at once.
The Best Morning Skincare Routine for Glowing Skin

Your morning routine doesn’t need to be complicated. Think hydrate, brighten and protect.
Step 1: Start With a Gentle Cleanser
You do not need your skin to feel squeaky clean after washing it.
In fact, aggressively scrubbing your face or constantly using harsh cleansers can disrupt your skin barrier and leave your face feeling dry and irritated, which is pretty much the opposite of the glow we’re trying to achieve.
Look for a gentle cleanser that removes dirt, oil and leftover skincare without leaving your face feeling tight afterward.
Product to try: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
This is a great simple option, especially if your skin tends to be normal or dry. It contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin and cleanses without giving your skin that stripped feeling.
CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Facial Cleanser, Gentle Face Cleanser, 19oz
- [ GENTLE CLEANSER ] Gentle face wash formulated with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, squalane & triglycerides. This gentle face cleanser removes makeup, dirt, and excess oil without stripping moisture for a non-greasy feel & long-lasting hydration

SHOP ON AMAZON →Step 2: Add Hydration
This step isn’t absolutely necessary for everyone, but if your skin tends to look dull because it’s dehydrated, adding a hydrating serum can make a noticeable difference in how plump and fresh your skin looks.
Hyaluronic acid is one of the easiest ingredients to add here because it helps attract and retain moisture.
Product to try: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Apply your hydrating serum to slightly damp skin and follow it with moisturizer to help seal everything in.
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides), Multi-Depth Hydration Serum for Plumper, Smoother Skin, 1 Fl Oz

- SUPPORTS SKIN BARRIER: Ceramides lock in moisture and support the skin’s protective barrier.
- REDUCES FINE LINES: Minimizes the appearance of fine dry lines and wrinkles while promoting elasticity and skin smoothness.

SHOP ON AMAZON →Step 3: Use Vitamin C
If glow is the goal, vitamin C is probably the active ingredient I would add to a morning routine first.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help brighten the appearance of skin, improve the look of dark spots and uneven tone, and support collagen production.
It also pairs beautifully with your next step: sunscreen.
Product to try: Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum
If you’re new to vitamin C or have sensitive skin, you don’t necessarily need to jump straight into a strong formula. Start slowly and pay attention to how your skin responds.
Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum, Antioxidant, 1.7 fl oz
- Enriched Serum for Brightening Skin: Our skin care serum is infused with a megadose of vitamin C to support bright skin and aid healthy skin cell turnover

SHOP ON AMAZON →Step 4: Moisturize
Even oily skin needs hydration.
A good moisturizer helps support your skin barrier and keeps water from escaping from your skin, which can make your complexion look smoother, softer and more luminous.
Look for ingredients like:
- Ceramides
- Glycerin
- Hyaluronic acid
- Niacinamide
- Squalane
Product to try: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer
This one contains ceramides, glycerin and niacinamide and is a nice option if you want hydration without an incredibly heavy cream.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer, 3.38oz
- Dual-Action – Repair & Long-Lasting Hydration For Face & Neck: Restores skin’s natural protective barrier in just 1 hour while delivering powerful 48-hour moisture for a healthier, rebalanced complexion

Price:: 24.99 $
SHOP ON AMAZON →Step 5: Never Skip Sunscreen
I know.
You have heard this approximately one million times.
But sunscreen really is one of the most important parts of a skincare routine for glowing skin.
UV exposure can contribute to hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and premature skin aging. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
And yes, that means wearing it consistently, not just when you’re going to the beach.
Product to try: EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
The best sunscreen is ultimately one you’ll actually wear every day, so finding a formula that feels good underneath your makeup is worth it.
EltaMD UV Clear Untinted Face Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide, SPF 46, 1.7 oz
- CLEAR SUNSCREEN FOR FACE: This lightweight face sunscreen with transparent Zinc Oxide provides broad spectrum SPF 46 protection and helps protect normal and sensitive skin types from UVA and UVB damage without leaving white cast residue behind

SHOP ON AMAZON →The Best Nighttime Skincare Routine for Glowing Skin

Your morning routine is mostly about protection.
Your nighttime routine is where you can focus a little more on renewal.
Step 1: Remove Your Makeup
If you’ve been wearing makeup or sunscreen all day, start by removing it before going in with your regular cleanser.
A cleansing balm or cleansing oil works especially well for breaking down makeup, SPF and excess oil without aggressively scrubbing your skin.
Product to try: e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm
This is an affordable first cleanse that melts away makeup and sunscreen and rinses away easily. Follow it with your regular facial cleanser to make sure your skin is completely clean before applying the rest of your nighttime skincare.
e.l.f. SKIN Holy Hydration! Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm, 2 oz
- NOURISHING CLEANSING BALM: Watch your makeup melt away! It’s solid cleansing balm that melts into a luxurious oil and turns into a nourishing milk texture that rinses off clean.

Price:: 11.97 $
SHOP ON AMAZON →Step 2: Cleanse Your Skin
Next, wash your face with the same gentle cleanser from your morning routine.
There’s no need to buy separate morning and nighttime cleansers unless your skin has a specific need for one. I would keep this step simple and use the CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser we talked about above.
The goal is clean skin that feels comfortable afterward, not tight or stripped.
Step 3: Use a Retinol
Retinol is one of those skincare ingredients that actually deserves a lot of the attention it gets.
With consistent use, retinoids can help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture and pigmentation while supporting collagen production over time. The key word here is consistent. You don’t need to use a ton of it, and you definitely don’t need to start using it every night.
If you’re new to retinol, start with a small amount a couple of nights per week and gradually increase your frequency as your skin adjusts.
Product to try: CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum
I like this as an approachable option because the formula also contains ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide. It’s an easy way to introduce retinol without turning your nighttime routine into a complicated science experiment.
If your skin is especially sensitive, you can also apply moisturizer before and after your retinol. This is sometimes called the “sandwich method” and can make retinol easier to tolerate.
Important: Retinoids aren’t appropriate for everyone, including during pregnancy. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, have very sensitive skin or are treating a skin condition, talk with your healthcare provider or dermatologist about which active ingredients are appropriate for you.
CeraVe Retinol Serum for Face with Niacinamide & Hyaluronic Acid, 1oz
- [ RETINOL FOR FACE ] This anti aging serum leverages encapsulated retinol with MVE Technology to ensure efficient delivery within for slow release over time, supporting your protective skin barrier long after you’ve finished applying
- [ WRINKLE SERUM ] Face serum formulated with retinol to refine texture and diminish fine lines. Wrinkle remover for face contains hyaluronic acid locking in moisture for lasting hydration & niacinamide to help calm and soothe the skin
- [ GENTLE ON SKIN ] Apply this fragrance-free, non-comedogenic retinol serum in the evening, building up to daily use to allow your skin to adjust to the retinol benefits.

SHOP ON AMAZON →Step 4: Finish With Moisturizer
Your last step is simple: moisturize.
At night, you can use the same moisturizer you use in the morning, or switch to something a little richer if your skin tends to be dry.
If you’re using retinol, I especially wouldn’t skip this step. Keeping your skin hydrated can help support your skin barrier and make your routine much easier to tolerate.
Product to try: CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream
This is a nice option when you want something richer at night without adding another treatment step. It contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide and gives you that comforting final layer before bed.
CeraVe Night Cream, Facial Moisturizer with Peptides & Niacinamide, 1.7oz
- [ PEPTIDE COMPLEX ] Help reduced the look of fine lines and wrinkles while supporting skin elasticity
- [ OVERNIGHT MOISTURIZER ] Helps soften, hydrate and retain skin’s moisture with hyaluronic acid. Renew the look of tired skin overnight. This skin care product does not come with a protection inner seal.
- [ GENTLE ON SKIN ] Fragrance free, non-comedogenic, and non-irritating formula

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your skin is leave it alone.
Should You Exfoliate for Glowing Skin?
Yes, but this is also where it’s very easy to overdo it.
Exfoliation can remove dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin, which can help improve dullness and texture. But exfoliating constantly can irritate your skin barrier and leave you with redness, sensitivity and dryness.
And irritated skin isn’t glowing skin.
If you want to add exfoliation, start with once a week and see how your skin responds.
Depending on your skin type and concerns, you might look for ingredients like:
AHAs: Glycolic or lactic acid can be helpful for dullness and surface texture.
BHAs: Salicylic acid can be especially useful if you’re dealing with oily skin, clogged pores or breakouts.
A Gentle Exfoliant to Try
Product to try: The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + Hyaluronic Acid 2%, High-Strength Exfoliating Serum for Smoother, Brighter Skin, 1 Fl Oz
- EFFECTIVE EXFOLIATION: A high-strength exfoliator with 10% lactic acid that smooths skin texture, visibly evens tone, and enhances luminosity.
- HYALURONIC ACID BOOST: Infused with hyaluronic acid.
- ANTI-IRRITANT: Includes Tasmanian Pepperberry extract, a known anti-irritant.

SHOP ON AMAZON →If you’re new to chemical exfoliation, this is a great place to start. Lactic acid is an AHA that helps loosen and remove dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin, which can help dull skin look smoother, brighter and more even over time.
The 5% concentration is on the gentler side, and the formula also includes hyaluronic acid to help support hydration. I’d start by using it once a week at night and see how your skin responds before adding another night.
You also don’t need to exfoliate every night to get glowy skin. More isn’t necessarily better here. Over-exfoliating can leave your skin irritated, dry and looking a whole lot less glowy than when you started.
I also recommend alternating exfoliation and retinol nights rather than using both at the same time, especially if you’re new to either ingredient.
My Favorite Ingredients for Glowing Skin

If you’re standing in the skincare aisle completely overwhelmed by the hundreds of bottles promising “radiance,” forget the marketing on the front and flip the bottle over.
These are some of the ingredients worth looking for.
Vitamin C
Best for: brightness, uneven tone and antioxidant protection.
Use it in the morning underneath moisturizer and sunscreen.
Hyaluronic Acid
Best for: hydration and temporarily creating a plumper, dewier appearance.
It’s especially helpful if your skin feels tight or dehydrated.
Niacinamide
Best for: supporting the skin barrier, improving the appearance of uneven tone and helping with redness and oiliness.
It’s also included in a lot of moisturizers and serums, so you may already have it in your routine.
Ceramides
Best for: supporting your skin barrier and helping your skin retain moisture.
If your face feels dry, tight or irritated, I would prioritize barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides before adding more exfoliating acids.
Retinol
Best for: improving texture, fine lines, pigmentation and overall skin appearance over time.
This isn’t an overnight glow product. Consistency is what matters.
Products That Can Help You Get Glowing Skin
You absolutely do not need all of these. Think of this more as a glow-skin shopping list that you can pull from based on what your routine is currently missing.
Gentle Cleanser:
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
Hydrating Serum:
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Brightening Vitamin C:
Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum
Hydrating Essence:
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
Daily Moisturizer:
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer
Retinol:
CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum
Daily Sunscreen:
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
Start with what you’re missing rather than buying everything at once.
Honestly, if you currently don’t have much of a skincare routine, I would rather see you consistently use cleanser + moisturizer + sunscreen than buy eight new products, use all of them for two weeks and then give up.
How to Get Glowy Skin Before Makeup
There is also a difference between improving your skin long-term and wanting your skin to look really glowy right now.
For those days, hydration is your best friend.
Try this before applying makeup:
- Gently cleanse your skin.
- Apply a hydrating serum to slightly damp skin.
- Follow with moisturizer.
- Apply sunscreen and give it a few minutes to settle.
- Use a hydrating or luminous primer if you want even more glow.
- Choose lighter layers of complexion products instead of piling on heavy matte foundation.
Cream blushes, liquid highlighters and dewy skin tints can definitely enhance the look, but when the skin underneath is hydrated, you usually need a lot less makeup to create that fresh-skin effect.
Don’t Forget About Your Skin Barrier
This might be the most overlooked part of getting glowy skin.
If you’re using a vitamin C serum, exfoliating toner, retinol, peel pads, scrub and whatever TikTok convinced you to buy this week, your skin may not need another active ingredient.
It might need a break.
Signs you may be doing too much can include:
- Burning or stinging when applying products
- Redness
- Flaking
- Unusual sensitivity
- Tightness
- Sudden dryness
When that happens, simplify.
Go back to a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen until your skin feels comfortable again.
More skincare isn’t always better skincare.
How Long Does It Take to Get Glowing Skin?
Some changes can happen fairly quickly.
Properly hydrating your skin, for example, can make it look plumper and more luminous almost immediately.
But ingredients that address pigmentation, texture, collagen and fine lines take time.
Vitamin C and retinoids aren’t overnight transformations. Think in terms of weeks and months of consistency, not days.
One of the easiest ways to see whether your routine is actually working is to take a makeup-free photo in the same lighting once a month. It’s much easier to notice gradual changes when you’re comparing photos instead of analyzing your face in the mirror every morning.
Lifestyle Habits That Help Support Healthy, Glowing Skin
Skincare products can do a lot, but they’re only one part of the picture.
A few boring-but-important habits matter too:
Get enough sleep. There is no serum that makes four hours of sleep feel like eight.
Eat a balanced diet. Your skin needs nutrients just like the rest of your body.
Stay hydrated. Drinking extra water isn’t going to magically erase wrinkles, but being adequately hydrated is part of supporting your overall health.
Don’t smoke. Smoking accelerates visible skin aging.
Protect yourself from the sun. Sunscreen, hats and shade all matter, especially when you’ll be outside for extended periods.
The Biggest Secret to Glowing Skin? Keep It Simple
If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s that you don’t need the world’s most complicated skincare routine.
Start here:
Morning:
Cleanser → Vitamin C → Moisturizer → SPF
Night:
Cleanser → Retinol → Moisturizer
Then add extra hydration or occasional exfoliation based on what your skin actually needs.
That’s it.
Because the best skincare routine isn’t the one with the prettiest shelf full of products.
It’s the one you can actually stick with.
Healthy, glowing skin is much more about doing a few good things consistently than constantly chasing the next miracle product.
And personally, I’ll take a simple routine that I can do half-asleep at night over a 12-step routine I’ll abandon by Wednesday.
