There’s something about fall that makes me want to make everything a little cozier. The blankets come out, the pumpkin candles get lit, and I inevitably start swapping some of the kids’ everyday books for our favorite seasonal ones.
And honestly, fall children’s books might be some of my favorites.
There are so many cute ones about colorful leaves, pumpkin patches, apple picking, chilly weather, and all those little things that make fall feel like, well… fall. We’ve collected quite a few over the years, from simple fall board books for toddlers to longer picture books that are perfect for preschoolers and young kids.

Our Favorite Fall Books for Kids
1. You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie
You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie is exactly the kind of sweet little board book I love having around for fall, especially for babies and toddlers.
It’s short and easy to get through before a little one loses interest, and the chunky pages, cutouts, and raised elements give tiny hands something to explore while you read. The illustrations are adorable, and the whole book has that warm, cozy pumpkin-season feel without being specifically about Halloween.
Best for: Babies and toddlers, especially ages 0–3.
2. You’re My Little Cutie Pie
If you like You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie, You’re My Little Cutie Pie is another adorable one from the same series to pull out later in the season.
This one leans more toward Thanksgiving with turkeys, cranberries, pumpkin pie, and other festive fall touches. Like the other books in the series, it has sturdy pages and interactive elements that make it especially good for babies and younger toddlers.
It’s sweet, simple, and basically made for November story time.
Best for: Babies and toddlers ages 0–3.
3. The Very Last Leaf
The Very Last Leaf is one of those fall picture books that has a little more going on beneath the surface.
Lance Cottonwood is a leaf who is great at pretty much everything. That is, until he realizes that eventually he’s going to have to do the one thing all leaves have to do: fall from the tree.
It’s a cute autumn story on its own, but I especially like the message about being nervous to do something new and learning that sometimes you have to let go even when you’re scared.
This is a good one for preschoolers and older kids who are ready for a slightly longer story.
Best for: Preschool and early elementary ages.
4. The Leaf Thief
This might be one of my favorite concepts for a fall children’s book.
Squirrel wakes up to discover that some of the beautiful leaves on his tree have disappeared and immediately decides there must be a leaf thief. 😂
Of course, we know what’s actually happening—the seasons are changing—but watching Squirrel try to figure it out makes for such a cute story.
I also love that kids are learning a little bit about why leaves change and fall without it feeling like you’re sitting them down for a science lesson.
Best for: Preschoolers and young elementary-age kids.
5. Barn in Fall
If pumpkin patches and fall festivals are part of your family’s autumn traditions, Barn in Fall fits right in.
The story takes place on a farm during fall festival season, with pumpkins, apples, hayrides, farm animals, and all the quintessential autumn things.
I especially like having books like this in our seasonal rotation because kids can connect what they see on the pages with things we’re actually doing during the season. Pull this one out before a trip to the pumpkin patch or farm and it makes the whole experience a little more fun.
Best for: Toddlers and preschoolers.
6. It’s Fall!
If I had to choose one book from this list that really captures a little bit of everything we associate with fall, It’s Fall! would be up there.
Instead of focusing on one particular part of the season, it celebrates all of it. Colorful leaves, cozy clothes, apple picking, corn mazes, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and more.
The illustrations are colorful and fun, and I love this one for the beginning of the season when you’re first pulling out the fall books and getting everyone excited for what’s coming.
Best for: Preschoolers, roughly ages 3–6.
7. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves
Poor Fletcher. 🥹
When the leaves on his favorite tree begin turning brown and falling to the ground, Fletcher is genuinely worried that something is wrong. He tries to protect the tree and save its leaves before eventually learning that this is simply what happens when the seasons change.
It’s such a sweet story, and the illustrations have a soft, cozy feel that makes it especially nice for bedtime.
There’s also a gentle lesson here about change, something that can be hard for little kids (and, let’s be real, adults too).
Best for: Preschoolers through early elementary.
8. A Very Big Fall
A Very Big Fall follows three leaves – Birch, Oak, and Maple as they realize that a pretty major change is coming. Eventually, they’re going to have to leave their tree.
Each leaf reacts to the idea differently, which makes this another fall story that works on two levels. Kids get a fun story about autumn leaves while also seeing that it’s completely normal for people (or leaves 😂) to have different feelings about change.
I like having a few books like this mixed into our seasonal collection because they’re still fun to read, but they also give you an easy opening for bigger conversations.
Best for: Preschool and early elementary ages.
9. The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Fall
For younger kids, The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Fall is such an easy addition to a fall book basket.
It uses the familiar Very Hungry Caterpillar illustrations to introduce some of the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings of autumn, from colorful leaves and windy weather to warm clothes and fall treats.
There isn’t a complicated storyline to follow, which makes it especially good for babies and toddlers who are still in the stage where simply looking at the pictures and talking about what they see is half the fun.
Best for: Babies, toddlers, and younger preschoolers.
10. Biscuit and the Great Fall Day
You really can’t go wrong with Biscuit.
In Biscuit and the Great Fall Day, Biscuit gets to experience basically the ultimate fall day: apples, leaves, a corn maze, a tractor ride, and plenty of exploring.
Because it’s part of the My First I Can Read series, the language is also simple and repetitive enough for kids who are starting to recognize words and participate more while you’re reading.
This is one I especially like for that in-between stage when kids still want you to read to them but are becoming interested in “reading” along.
Best for: Preschoolers and beginning readers.
11. Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch
And because apparently Biscuit knows how to do fall properly, he gets two spots on this list. 😂
Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch is a shorter board book centered around, you guessed it, a trip to the pumpkin patch.
There are pumpkins for jack-o’-lanterns, pumpkin pie, and plenty for Biscuit to investigate along the way.
This would be another really cute book to read before your family’s annual pumpkin patch trip, especially for toddlers who are starting to understand and get excited about seasonal traditions.
Best for: Toddlers and preschoolers.
12. Nature Stories: Little Apple Tree
Not every fall book has to be specifically about fall.
Little Apple Tree is part of the Nature Stories collection and follows an apple tree through its life cycle, from blossoms and pollination all the way to apples ready to be harvested.
It’s a really cute way to connect one of our favorite fall activities, apple picking, with what’s actually happening in nature.
I love having a couple of educational books mixed in with our regular picture books, especially when they explain things kids are already noticing and asking questions about.
Best for: Toddlers and preschoolers.
13. Nature Stories: Little Acorn
Little Acorn is another book from the Nature Stories collection, this time following a tiny acorn as it eventually grows into an oak tree.
Acorns are one of those little things kids seem to notice everywhere once fall arrives, so this is a fun one to pair with a nature walk. Go collect a few acorns outside and then come home and read about what they can eventually become.
The gentle rhyming text and nature theme make this another good choice if you want some educational fall books that still feel fun and cozy.
Best for: Toddlers and preschoolers.
14. The ABCs of Fall
For little ones who are learning their letters, The ABCs of Fall combines alphabet practice with all kinds of autumn-themed words and illustrations.
Instead of a traditional storyline, kids work their way from A to Z while seeing familiar fall objects, animals, foods, and activities along the way.
It’s simple, colorful, and easy to read repeatedly. Which, as anyone with a toddler knows, is pretty important because you’re probably going to read it approximately 700 times. 😂
Best for: Toddlers and preschoolers, especially ages 1–3.
15. You’re the Apple of My Pie
Last but not least, You’re the Apple of My Pie is a sweet little fall board book centered around love and gratitude, with plenty of silly autumn puns thrown in.
It’s definitely a good one to have out around Thanksgiving, but it works throughout the fall season too.
I especially like this one for babies and toddlers because you don’t need a complicated story to make a book feel special at this age. Sometimes a short, cute book about how much you love them is exactly what you want.
Best for: Babies and toddlers.
Choosing Fall Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers
If you’re building your own collection of fall books for kids, you definitely don’t need to buy an entire shelf of them at once.
For babies and younger toddlers, I tend to gravitate toward board books with sturdy pages, bright illustrations, simple rhymes, and interactive elements. Books like You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie, The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Fall, and The ABCs of Fall are easy to pull out for a quick read-through without expecting a tiny person to sit through a long plot.
As kids move into the preschool years, you can start adding longer fall picture books like The Leaf Thief, Fletcher and the Falling Leaves, and The Very Last Leaf. These still have all the fun autumn imagery, but they also introduce bigger ideas like changing seasons, trying new things, and dealing with change.
And don’t forget the library! Seasonal books are one of my favorite things to borrow because you can rotate different ones into your book shelf every few weeks without buying every single cute fall book you come across, which is admittedly very tempting.
Make a Fall Book Basket for Kids
One of the easiest ways to make seasonal books feel special is simply to put them somewhere kids can actually see them.
Instead of leaving all of our fall books mixed into the regular bookshelf, I like the idea of pulling a handful out and putting them in a basket where they’re easy to grab throughout the season.
You could start September with books about apples, acorns, and changing leaves, bring out more pumpkin books as October gets closer, and then rotate in the Thanksgiving and gratitude books during November.
You can also add library books throughout the season so the basket keeps changing without having to continually buy new ones.
It doesn’t have to be elaborate. A basket of books, a cozy blanket, and maybe a trip outside afterward to hunt for colorful leaves or acorns is plenty.
I think that’s part of why I love seasonal books so much. They’re such a simple way to make ordinary things feel a little more special.
Kids already notice when the leaves start changing, pumpkins suddenly appear everywhere, and the weather begins to feel different. Reading books about those same things gives them another way to experience the season—and gives us an excuse to slow down and read together.
