What the heck is SEO? The Ultimate Guide for Beginners

Whether you’re a blogger, setting up a website, or you’ve been hearing a thing or two about SEO on social media you may be wondering what the heck is that?! I remember the first time I ever heard the acronym I had no clue what it was or how to use it. I just knew it was something that bloggers did (and that was a far off goal for me at that time!).

However, as time went on I decided to dip my toes in and learn about what exactly SEO was and how I could utilize it. I started seeing social media gurus telling me that I should be using SEO in my social media and LTK posts and decided I needed to gain a better understanding of it. And now I want to pass that information along to you!

So.. What is SEO?

SEO is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of optimizing your website to improve its visibility and ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs). In simpler terms, it’s about making your website more attractive to search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo so that they’re more likely to rank it higher when users search for relevant keywords or phrases. I know I mentioned social media and LTK and I will touch on how to use SEO for that later, but for the sake of this blog post, I will mostly be talking about how to utilize it for your website.

Why is SEO Important?

Think about how you typically search for information online. You probably type a few words into a search engine and click on one of the top results that appear. Rarely do you venture beyond the first page of results. This is where SEO comes into play.

By optimizing your website for search engines, you increase the likelihood of it appearing higher in search results. This, in turn, means more visibility, more clicks, and ultimately more potential customers or readers discovering your content.

Key Components

  1. On-Page SEO: This involves optimizing individual pages of your website by incorporating relevant keywords into your content, meta tags, headings, and URLs. It also includes improving the overall user experience by ensuring fast load times, easy navigation, and mobile-friendliness.
  2. Off-Page SEO: This focuses on building your website’s authority and reputation through external factors such as backlinks from other reputable websites, social media engagement, and online mentions.
  3. Technical SEO: This involves optimizing the technical aspects of your website, such as improving site speed, fixing broken links, and ensuring proper indexing by search engine crawlers.
  4. Content Creation: Creating high-quality, relevant, and valuable content is at the heart of SEO. Your content should not only be optimized for search engines but also designed to engage and resonate with your target audience. The best way to find your voice and target audience is by writing!
  5. Keyword Research: Identifying and targeting the right keywords is crucial for SEO success. By understanding what terms your audience is searching for, you can tailor your content to meet their needs and preferences.

Using SEO on Social Media

Like I mentioned before, search engine optimization isn’t only for websites. You can also use it to optimize your social media posts (and you should be doing this if you’re not already!). Make sure your bio and captions are filled with relevant keywords so that you and your posts are easier to find.

I’ll give you a fantastic example of this that I came across recently. My two year old spilled something inside his ball pit so I was tasked with cleaning it. I ended up Googling “How to clean plastic ball pit balls” and the first 3 results that came up under videos were a video on Facebook, a YouTube short, and a TikTok video. I ended up loving one of the accounts after watching her video and that person gained a follower! THAT’S the power of SEO! All because she used relevant keywords in her video’s caption so that I was able to find it when I Googled looking for a solution.

Getting Started with SEO

If you’re new to SEO, getting started can seem daunting; there is so much information out there. If after reading this you still feel lost and like you don’t understand, don’t fret. I remember it feeling like I was learning a whole new language when I first tried to learn more about it. I did a whole lot of Googling, and a whole lot of reading on blogs similar to this one! There are plenty of resources available to help you navigate the world of search engine optimization. From online tutorials and guides to SEO tools and plugins, there are many ways to learn and implement effective strategies for your website. I highly suggest going on YouTube and watching a few videos on it. Some of the creators on there do a fantastic job of breaking it down and giving you step-by-step guides on how to implement it.

Remember, SEO is not a one-time task but an ongoing process. Search engine algorithms are constantly evolving, so it’s essential to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices to ensure your website remains competitive in the digital landscape. And one day it will click and you’ll start to recognize the same terms. Then before you know it you’ll be implementing SEO like a pro! I hope this blog post helped you at least get a basic understanding of search engine optimization and how you can begin to use it.

Conclusion

In conclusion, SEO is a powerful tool for improving your website’s visibility, attracting more organic traffic, and ultimately achieving your online goals. By understanding the key principles of SEO and implementing effective strategies, you can take your website to new heights and reach a wider audience than ever before.
