Traveling with a toddler is an adventure like no other! As a parent who has embarked on journeys with my own little explorer, I’ve learned some invaluable tips that have made our travels smoother and more enjoyable. We just got back from a trip to California so I wanted to write this blogpost while the experiences were still fresh in my memory. Here are my top 7 tips for traveling with a toddler:
Pack Abundant Snacks
One of the first lessons I learned is to never underestimate the power of snacks! Toddlers seem to have bottomless stomachs, especially when on the move. I found this snackle box on Amazon that I can’t recommend enough! The name comes from the fun union of the words ‘snack’ and ‘tackle box’ because it’s essentially a tackle box for snacks. It comes with 10 small compartments that you can fill with your toddler’s favorite treats and it came in CLUTCH on the last two trips I’ve had it. Some of my son’s current favorites if you need some ideas are cheddar bunnies, string cheese, veggie straws, and an assortment of fruit. These snacks not only keep hunger at bay but also serve as a great distraction during long stretches of travel.
Bring New Toys and Activities
Before each trip, I love picking out a few new toys or activities that I know will captivate my child’s interest. It’s amazing how a simple coloring book or a set of stickers can provide hours of entertainment during a flight or car ride. I keep these surprises hidden until we’re en route—it’s like unwrapping new little gifts throughout the journey. I’ll include some of the things I bought for past trips in the carousel at the bottom of this blogpost.
Plan Around Nap Time
Timing is everything when it comes to traveling with a toddler. Whenever possible, I try to schedule our flights or long drives around my child’s nap time. I know some people will think I’m crazy for this, but hear me out. A well-timed nap can make all the difference in their mood and energy levels upon arrival. Plus, it gives me a chance to relax myself, too!
Airplanes in particular are GREAT for napping toddlers because the ambient noise in the cabin is like a personal sound machine for them. It naturally sounds like the White Noise setting on our Hatch, and I’ve noticed most people keep the windows down and lights off in the cabin on most flights – both huge wins for nap time! Now, the risk to this is that your toddler won’t fall asleep, but will instead be a cranky mess by the time you arrive at your destination. But if the stars do align for you, it just makes everything run more smoothly. If you’re traveling by car or you’re just looking for a portable sound machine for travel, I highly recommend the Hatch Rest Go.
Prepare for Comfort
Comfort is a priority for both of us during travel. I make sure my toddler is dressed in soft, cozy clothing (usually bamboo) and bring along their favorite blanket or stuffed animal for extra comfort. A lightweight stroller can be very useful for sightseeing or navigating busy airports—it typically provides a familiar space for your child to relax. However, my toddler has outright refused the stroller pretty much since birth. We’ve taken it on two flights and it was just an extra thing we had to push around the airport. For that reason we will not be bringing one again anytime soon. So keep that in mind when deciding on whether or not to bring the stroller along.
Keep Essentials Handy
I’ve learned the importance of having a well-stocked “emergency kit” within easy reach. Diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and snacks are always kept in a separate bag that’s readily accessible. Being prepared for any situation helps me stay calm and focused on enjoying the journey.
Embrace the Adventure
Traveling with a toddler can be unpredictable, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. We take our time exploring new places, stopping to admire interesting sights or play in local parks. Embracing spontaneity and being open to new experiences has made our travels richer and more memorable.
Cherish the Moments
Above all, I remind myself to cherish every moment of our travels together. From discovering new foods to seeing the wonder in my child’s eyes at a breathtaking view, these are the experiences that create lasting memories. Traveling with a toddler is a special chapter in our family’s story—one filled with laughter, curiosity, and endless possibilities.
In conclusion, traveling with a toddler requires a lot of patience, preparation, and a sense of adventure. By incorporating these personal tips into your travel plans, you can make the journey as enjoyable for your little one as the destination itself. Safe travels and happy exploring!
